Netanyahu: We Are Approaching the End of the Gaza War and the Defeat of Hamas

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Monday that Israel is “approaching the end of the war in Gaza” and working towards “defeating what remains of the Iranian axis,” in reference to Hamas.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Knesset Museum in the “Beit Frumin” building—formerly the Knesset’s first headquarters in Jerusalem—Netanyahu also took aim at Israel’s judiciary.

“The Knesset comes from the people, in the name of the people, and for the people,” he said, adding that Beit Frumin’s central location in the city provided “an informal expression of a basic principle—that the people are sovereign. The people elect their representatives.”

Netanyahu criticized recent tensions between branches of government, saying:
“In the past, there was harmony and mutual respect. We were a classic parliamentary democracy with checks and balances that form the foundation of modern democracy. I hope we can return to the understandings of those days—the people want this, and it will benefit everyone.”

Israeli President Isaac Herzog also addressed Israel’s global standing, reacting to Australia’s announcement that it will recognize a Palestinian state. Herzog claimed that “Israel has always sought and will always seek peace with its neighbors, including the Palestinians. We are fighting for the free world, and Australia’s declaration is a grave and dangerous mistake that will not help the Palestinians nor the Israeli captives.”
